It’s time to think about National Poetry Day again – this year it’s Thursday 3rd October, and the theme is Counting, and it turns out I’ve been thinking quite a lot about counting this year.
I work in schools and other settings throughout the year, and that includes National Poetry Day, so what luck that I decided to spend National Poetry Writing Month drafting a poem each day on the theme of Money.! I thought this would be a particularly difficult challenge, because I didn’t think I was all that interested in money. However, it turns out to be a massive, fascinating topic that seeps into almost every aspect of life (who knew?) and that you can come at, poetically, from a huge range of perspectives.
I had huge fun drafting a poem a day on this topic, and I’m looking forward to working on them some more as soon as I can carve out the time. And, of course, lots of that thinking and those poems are directly relevant to the National Poetry Day theme! Concepts like fairness, value (which of course leads to values), and questions like what we really, really want and what we are prepared to do to get it, come very fast to the surface; concepts and questions that fill children’s worlds every day.
